Serag Monier is an Egyptian award-winning novelist, a plastic surgeon, and a lecturer in medical school. He has seven published novels in Arabic and two translated in English. His last novel, A New Tale of Al-Andalus, won the Sheikh Rashid bin Hamad Al-Sharqi Creativity Award in February 2020.

Monier’s greatest strength is his ability to write characters who remain sympathetic even as they show the reader the worst aspects of themselves. Although Omar and Shadia are both skilled in different areas—Shadia has useful medical knowledge, for example—neither of them are superhuman; they’re just regular people in an unusual and terrible situation, and the way that their relationship develops feels organic.
Neanderthals is a really exhilarating thriller of sci-fi that keeps you on your toes.
When Omar and Shadia are transported to another world where they must fight for survival as they are being mercilessly hunted. The plot of Neanderthals really keeps your heart-racing and the characters are relatable and well-written. While I'm not big on sci-fi, I really enjoyed this book.

WOULD FREEDOM TRULY

COME LAST?

Would freedom truly come last? Prisoners usually shouted for freedom at first, but after a period of despair, they asked for improved conditions. If their present conditions worsened, they longed to go back to the previous conditions that were initially unsatisfactory. Was that our case on the island? Was it the purpose of the experiment? To explore humans’ ability to endure and accept the unacceptable if the price was their basic safety?
